Samuel HOCHSTEDT, aliases HOCHSTADT, HOCHSTETTER: Romanian, German. HOCHSTADT (the spelling he adopted in the USA) was born in Romania but moved to Vienna at an early age. He joined the Austrian Communist Party in 1922. Between 1927 and 1934 he worked for the Austro-Russian Trading Co. According to Krivitsky he was recruited in 1934 as a Russian military intelligence (4th Dept) agent, and went to Moscow in 1935. Thereafter Krivitsky said that he had been involved in attempts to buy arms for the Republicans in Spain. HOCHSTADT emigrated to the USA in 1938 as Chief Accountant for the cover firm Oriental Trading and Engineering. Thereafter he worked for various diamond companies in New York
