John Wilson Croker. Our reasons for corresponding with the Governor at Newfoundland on the reduction intended to be made in the salary of Mr Holmes, Clerk in charge of Stores at St Johns, were that we were unaware there would be any Naval Officer in command of a ship on the spot, to select a suitable person to take charge of the buildings there, if Mr Holmes did not continue in employment. We omitted to advise the Admiral on the station of our action. After communicating with the Victualling Board, it was decided to restore to Mr Holmes his original salary of £96, instead of reducing it to £50.
