Description

Commissioner Sir Robert Barlow, Chatham to the Board. Update of the 1803 survey of the depth of water in the River Medway between Rochester Bridge and Sheerness with evidence for an apparent decrease in water depth over the period. Have sent a sketch of soundings between Rochester Bridge and Ochamness by the Assistant Master Attendant, Mr. White, which can be placed over Mr. Hemmans' chart of 1803 for comparison, but there is no standard point of reference with the low water mark. Gives possible causes for the river's shoaling and concludes that the main cause is the effect of the Rochester Bridge and the Maidstone Locks upon the river's current and the flux and reflux of tides. He recommends measures to preserve and restore the velocity of the current.
