Description (What the record is about)
-
Copy letter from Robert Barrie, Naval Yard, Kingston to the Navy Board. A sum has been included in the estimate for a dock but there is no suitable site near this yard, which could be excavated. A dock, in accordance with the proposed plan, could be built on the ice during the winter, as suggested by Mr Mare, the Master Shipwright of the yard. This would serve every purpose of a dry dock. If approved, a powerful steam engine and suitable persons to erect and attend it would be required, which should also be able to be used as a sawmill and for other purposes. Propose 2 engines, as these would be more easily repaired than one larger engine.
Enclosure.
