Copy letter from R Barlow, Chatham Dock to the Navy Board. M. Bonnet claims to have invented machinery, by which all desirable properties of cordage can be attained, beyond what has hitherto been found practicable and with economy of labour and material. He does not describe the machinery, and concludes by stating that before any trial, or showing his machinery, he would require a previous agreement with the Government desirous of obtaining his plans. Would be surprised if his cordage were better than that manufactured by machinery in UK ropeyards, and would only recommend treating with M. Bonnet if he is willing to submit specimen cordage to an impartial trial, which proves its superiority.
