Description (What the record is about)
-
Copy report from John Rennie to the Navy Board. The breakwater under construction at Plymouth Sound has been examined at high and low water spring tides. Compares the estimate of materials, vessels and time span predicted in April 1806 with the present, and the proposed employment of the stone and sheer vessels and cranes. A timber building on legs, for use as a smiths' shop, should be erected when completing the upper part of the breakwater. The employment of 30-40 labourers, who should sleep on board the sheer vessels is recommended. The work has not produced any sandbanks or eddies and will be favourable to both the anchorage and ships' movements, as reported by Mr Whidbey in August 1814. The quarries at Oveston are in excellent state, but the quarries now supplying stone for works in the dockyard, are not fit for purpose. Recommend the right to work the Oveston quarries in perpetuity be purchased.
