John Wilson Croker. Copy letter from Alexander Cochrane, the Asia, Bermuda. Are sending a copy letter received from Commodore Evans, the Superintendent of Naval Works at this port on failure to obtain tenders for the erection of a Naval Hospital. I believe there is no person here capable of contracting for such a large building, estimated to cost £200,000. The plan seems to be a copy of the one at Haslar, but is unsuited to Bermuda because of the summer heat. There is no site on the island of a sufficient size. Recommend a smaller hospital similar to that at Barbados, which is made of stone rather than wood. The current hospital is to be sold in 6 months, and unless a replacement is provided quickly, there will be no place to receive the sick.
