Description

Joint report by Messrs Thompson and Rennie, London to the Navy Board. The Board of Ordnance has ceded land at Pater Fort, Pembroke, and a further quantity of land has been purchased from Mr Meyrick for the dockyard's artificers and workmen's dwellings A plan has been made for a new dockyard to provide the most suitable arrangement for the building of ships only. Give the relative merits of building ships in day docks or slips, and conclude that in both cases ships should be built under cover. Unless one or more docks are made at Pater, ships built there must be docked at other ports for coppering prior to going into the water. Two dockyard designs have been made, one with 3 building docks and 2 slips, the other with 5 slips and no docks. If docks are to be built, the sills should be laid nearly level with the low water of a spring tide, with wharf or haven wall within the tideway. Also refer to the facility for the conveyance of timber and other materials. Propose a range of buildings, as designed by Mr Holl, to be erected south of the dock and for road access in line with Pater Church to Pembroke and the supply of water to the dwellings. Estimates are given for each of the plans and although more expensive the one with 3 docks and 2 slips is preferred.
