Description (What the record is about)
-
Copy letter from S.N. Inglefield at Halifax Yard reporting on his organisation of the militia to defend the yard. In 1805 the men of the yard were summoned to serve in the militia defending Halifax town. At the time Vice Admiral Berkley came to an agreement with Sir John Wentworth, Lieutenant Governor of the Colony, that the yard personnel would be formed into a militia for the purpose of defending the yard and harbour thus keeping them close to their place of work and minimising the disruption to their normal duties. In anticipation of war with America, Sir John Sherbrooke, Governor and Commander in Chief, has expressed his intention to inspect the men under arms at the yard and a yard militia has again been organised and a list of the officers and men is enclosed. Mr. Atkinson, Master Attendant, has refused to accept the commission of 2nd Major as it is beneath him.
Enclosure.
