Description (What the record is about)
-
Evan Nepean. In about 1723 an attempt was made to sink a well at the Sheerness yard, which was continued until October 1726 when, for reasons unknown, it was given up. Messrs. Bentham, Chalk and Crayden of Sheerness, have complained of the inconvenience of the lack of water and that this well, if dug deeper, might produce a sufficient supply. They have asked for permission for the work and, if successful, to hold possession of the well. Have asked Commissioner Duncan to treat with Messrs. Bentham, Chalk and Crayden and they propose: (i) the water that the well may produce to be allowed gratis two fixed days in the week to the dockyard (ii) Messrs. Bentham, Chalk and Crayden to keep the well in repair and in the case of dilapidation or neglect, the well is to revert back to the government. The proposals are submitted for consideration and ask whether we should accept them or whether the Board should incur the expense of digging the well.
