Copy letter received by Vice Admiral Benjamin Caldwell from Mr. Gillespie, Surgeon of the Navy from Martinique. Having been a witness of the loss of a great number of men during the last year in that station, Mr. Gillespie reports some reflections about how to preserve the health of Seamen. The abuse of spirits is sometimes more destructive than the enemies of the Country. The substitution of wine to spirits is to be considered of great beneficit and should be continued and improved. The utility of flannel to preserve from epidemic sickness and dysentery and recommends sending flannel shirts and trousers from England before the next rainy season. Dutch caps are to be replaced by hats, which are more useful in preventing sun strokes. How the medicines supplied in Sir John Jervis' Squadron turned out to be serviceable and propose they are supplied free, in addition to other listed medicines.
