Description (What the record is about)
-
Philip Stephens. We have ordered the several Purveyors of timber to obtain an account of the quantity and quality of timber growing within their districts so that we shall be ready to contract for all they can procure this year. There is a great scarcity of large timber as a consequence of the vast consumption of the last 12 years. This was pointed out in the report made to the House of Commons in 1771 and also in the pamphlet Heart of Oak in 1764. If the East India Company could be induced to build with foreign timber for 6 or 8 years we could procure timber that would otherwise be used by them.
