Description

Folio 32: Table 2: A list of men who during the period of this journal, have received wounds or hurts which may disqualify them for the public service, or subsequently in any way interfere with their earning a livelihood. (Names and details follow). Number on the ship's books, 15/229; Edward Goodfellow, aged 15, midshipman, hurts - On 30 October 1869 in the West Indies while fencing received a contusion of left eyeball by the point of a single stick. This was followed by inflammation of cornea, sclerotic and conjunctiva, which materially affected his sight and health, and for which he was on 7 January 1870 discharged to shore for treatment (his father being a physician). He was granted a pension certificate. Number on the ship's books, 5/354; Henry Gibbons, aged 22, able seaman, hurts- on the afternoon of 1 October 1869 while at work at one of the large dockyard cranes at Plymouth, the handle took charge and stuck him forcibly on the left side of the face, felling and rendering him insensible, and fracturing his lower jaw, left side, just above the angle, with two small wounds near it. He was sent to hospital and granted a pension certificate. Number on the ship's books, 10/91; Christopher Honey, aged 17, boy 1st class, hurts- on 15 October 1870 while employed as messenger was injured by a fall down the main deck ladder to the lower deck causing a rupture in the right groin and contusion of right testicle, by striking an iron stanchion. His attention was not drawn to the injury for 4 days, nor was he seen by a medical officer till the 22 October when he was sent to hospital and granted a pension certificate. Number on the ship's books, 5/129; Beniah Rollison, aged 22, able seaman, hurts- was injured by falling on 7 September 1870 while furling the foretopsail during a gale off Cape Finisterre, to the deck, a height of 70 feet, striking the fore bits, breaking a belaying pin and alighting chiefly on his head causing a wound 4 inches long in the upper part of nose and right eye brow, laying bare the skull and nasal bones; and also a fracture of right thigh. Number on the ship's books, 5/551; Edward Hobbs, aged 19, ordinary seaman, hurts- was injured on 10 December 1870 during heavy weather off the coast of Portugal, was lying on a grating on the half deck when a sudden lurch of the ship caused him to slide on it to the lee side, where his right leg got under a shot-rack causing a compound fracture of tibia and fibula a little above the ankle, for which he was sent to Haslar hospital and granted a pension certificate.

Average number victualled daily during the period, 264; aged 15 to 25 (156), aged 25 to 35 (81), aged 35 to 45 (26), aged 45 to 55 (1).
