Description (What the record is about)
-
Joseph Tucker, Master Shipwright, Plymouth, to Commissioner Fanshawe. The Majestic came into Cawsand bay on 15th August and he received orders to report on her defects. None had been received but on 16th August, Mr. Watson, Foreman, boarded the Conqueror and got aboard the Majestic from her and asked to see the list of defects. He was told the Captain had ordered these were not to be given but could be read. He was prevented from inspecting the ship and was told that the Carpenter would not go to sea again in her. This was reported to Mr. Churchill, the Commissioner's Assistant, by Mr. Watson, and on the 18th the Commissioner and Mr. Churchill went on board and demanded the details from the Carpenter. While he was preparing his report, Mr. Tucker was visited by his Lordship, who was told the repairs could be carried out where she lay. His Clerk, Mr. Duins with Messrs. Ansell and Jagoe were present and can confirm what was said. Mr. Tucker assures his lordship of the safety of the ship.
