William Marsden. The Carpenters on ships in Ordinary are reported to being employed in the yards. This was done as a result of Sir Evan Nepean's letter of April 1803, that Carpenters of ships in Ordinary, who did not come forward in fitting, were employed in caulking. The letter complained about excessive rates of pay, which are overstated - the figure of £90 per annum, rather than the stated £300.
