Description (What the record is about)
-
John James, pro-Consul at Naples, to the Board. The Betsey tender belonging to the Madras, Captain JM Schomberg, fitting out at Malta, was attacked off Sicily by two French privateers. During the attack the Master's Mate of the Madras, Mr. Wheeler, was killed, the tender struck its colours and the wounded were carried to Civita Vecchia. The 31 prisoners were handed over to Richard Barham, English pro-consul there. Hugh Elliott, HM envoy at Naples instructed Mr. Bartram to do all he could for these men, by supplying food and arranging for a Surgeon. The prisoners were to be sent from there to Malta by the tender under the command of Lieutenant Peter Despourrins. Mr. Bartram sent the account for the payments he had made for quarantine, good and medical services to Mr. Jones. He has drawn a bill payable to Messrs. Porter and Veichner.
