Description (What the record is about)
-
Evan Nepean. Mrs James Nagle has claimed monies owing following the death of her husband during a serious outbreak of Yellow Fever on HMS Grampus off Santo Domingo. The senior surviving officer, Master William Whaddy, did not behave in accordance with the Printed Instructions before he too was incapacitated by the disease. Claims that he paid the money due to Mrs Nagle to Mr Littledale, Commissary General on the Island, who received in exchange letters of credit drawn on Turnbull & Company, his agents in London, cannot be supported as Turnbull & Co claim they have no funds in favour of Mr Littledale, who was subsequently killed in a duel. Part of Mr Whaddy's pay has been withheld to cover any payments needed.
