Description
Content
Folios 411-412. Letter from George Sage, Assistant Overseer, Chew Magna, to the Poor Law Commission requesting the opinion of the Commission in the matter of the election of guardians. He notes that at the vestry meeting of the parish on 25 March 1847 Philip Parker had proposed, and John Slocombe seconded, that Abraham Danger and Sage [himself] be nominated as guardians, which was unanimously agreed. However the nomination had been rejected by the clerk to the union as Sage was assistant overseer. He had therefore been asked to seek the Commissioners' opinion before the elections were due to take place on 7 April 1847. Annotated: clerk's decision borne out by 5 & 6 Vic c 57 s 14, expressly incapacitating assistant overseers serving as guardians. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
