Folios 440-441. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, submitting the following able bodied relief cases for their sanction: James Daws, Labourer, Matha Daws, his wife, and their children, Elizabeth Daws, [Atheliny Daws], Ann Daws, John Daws, Edward Daws, [Catherine Daws]. Abraham Greensmith, FWK [Framework knitter], and Mary Greensmith, his wife, near confinement, and their 2 children. James Truman, Labourer, and Phobe Truman, his wife, and their children, John Truman, Collier, William Truman, Collier, Catherine Truman, [Havnett Truman], Elizabeth Truman, and Eliza Truman. Annotated: sanction relief given but further relief should be referred to the workhouse. Also a note from E Senior, [Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], states that greater vigilance is required to stop out relief to the able bodied, especially on the part of the overseers. The relief to Daws should be disallowed, as should that to Greensmith, who resides at Nottingham which is out of the union. It should also be disallowed to Truman. Paper Number: 7699/B/1841.
