Folios 315-316. Letter from Thomas Fookes, Schoolmaster at Probus Workhouse in the Truro Poor Law Union, to Lord Ebrington, Secretary to the Poor Law Board, seeking assistance with regard to his position. He kept a school in Truro for 18 years but it was ruined by a long illness. Sent to the union and treated by a skilful doctor, he has now recovered and was appointed schoolmaster at Probus Workhouse in February 1847, on double rations and union clothing, but is not treated as a proper schoolmaster. His father, formerly in the employment of Lords Camelford and Grenville, was murdered and robbed. Annotated: state that his fitness for the office will be determined by the examination of the school inspector, to which all workhouse schoolmasters will for the future be subject.
