Description

Folio 1: Printed instructions on completing nosological tables, recording where a patient was taken ill, dividing the General Remarks into three sections relating to the ship and crew, her movements and places visited and a consideration of the diseases.

Folio 2: case no 1, Mr George Bruce, aged 24, Sub Lieutenant; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, epididymitis and gonorrhoea; put on sick list, 21 July 1873, sent 23 July 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 2-3: case no 2, John Heard, aged 27, Leading Seaman; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, synovitis, great inflammation of the left knee; put on sick list, 23 July 1873, sent 26 July 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 3: case no 3, Fraccis Tywell, aged 31, Captain Quarter Deck; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, gonorrhoea; put on sick list, 25 July 1873, sent 26 July 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 3: case no 4, Mr William Heard, aged 26, Engineer; taken ill at [Devonport]; sick or hurt, debility - defection of sight, this patient was discharged per order of the Commander in Chief, according to the Surgeon, Captain Purvis had showed him the letter written by the patient stating that his health would not admit of his serving on the China Station and that his hearing and sight were defective; put on sick list, 24 July 1873, sent 26 July 1873 to Hospital at Stonehouse.

Folio 3: case no 5, Arthur Rose, aged 26, Engine Room Artificer; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, neuralgia and loss of teeth; put on sick list, 7 August 1873, invalided 11 August 1873 at Plymouth Hospital.

Folio 3: case no 6, James Cooper, aged 23, Private Marine; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, Syphilis ((pry.) and bubo; put on sick list, 11 August 1873, sent 12 August 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 3-4: case no 7, Arthur Oakley, aged 22, Able Seaman; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, gonorrhoea; put on sick list, 13 August 1873, sent 14 August 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 4: case no 8, Joseph Smith, aged 21, Private Marine; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, gonorrhoea; put on sick list, 31 August 1873, sent 4 September 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 4: case no 9, Charles Mathews, aged 17, Boy 1st Class; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, opthalmia, inflammation of the conjunctiva of the right eye; put on sick list, 3 September 1873, sent 8 September 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 4: case no 10, Henry Law, aged 28, Captain Fore Top; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, erysipelas; put on sick list, 11 September 1873, sent 12 September 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 4-5: case no 11, Charles Drake, aged 37, Gunner's Mate; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, fracture of left patella, while running to free the rope tripped over the corner of a coal bag and fell on the left knee; put on sick list, 19 September 1873, sent 19 September 1873 to Hospital at Plymouth, pension certificate was granted.

Folios 5-6: case no 12, Frederick Warth, aged 34, Ship's Steward; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, phthisis, complained of cough accompanied by expectoration attributed to a cold caught while living on board the 'Vengeance' hulk in Keyham; put on sick list, 13 October 1873, died 8 November 1873 at 7.55 pm.

Folio 7: case no 13 and 15-16, Henry Champion, aged 17, Boy 1st Class; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, wound of left index finger, while employed chopping wood with tomahawk; put on sick list, 27 October 1873, discharged 16 December 1873 to light duty, brought for survey 19 December 1873 and invalided at Ascension, pension certificate was granted.

Folios 7-8: case no 14, Joseph Hayes, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at sea, on approaching St. Vincent; sick or hurt, syphilis (primary); put on sick list, 29 October 1873, discharged 20 November 1873 to HMS Simoom for passage to Ascension.

Folio 8: case no 15, Charles Reilly, aged 46, Stoker; taken ill at sea, on approaching St. Vincent; sick or hurt, rheumatism and debility; put on sick list, 11 November 1873, discharged 20 November 1873 to HMS Simoom for passage to Ascension.

Folios 8-9: case no 16, Mr Richard Greenleaf, aged 48, Gunner 1st Class (Supernumerary) on passage to HMS Egmont; taken ill at Cape Castle Coast; sick or hurt, periostitis (tibial); put on sick list, 20 November 1873, discharged 20 November 1873 to HMS Simoom for passage to Ascension.

Folios 9-10: case no 17, Thomas Tilling, aged 23, Private Marine (Supernumerary belonging to the 'Simoom'; received on board at Cape Castle Coast; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 28 November 1873, sent 20 December 1873 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 10: case no 18, Robert Greenwood, aged 24, Private Marine; taken ill at Cape Castle Coast; sick or hurt, febris, was received on board on 28 November after five weeks service on shore with the marines of 'Simoom' to which ship he belonged, was seized with rigors followed by slight heat of skin; put on sick list, 30 November 1873, sent 20 December 1873 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 10: case no 19, William Manship, aged 22, Private Marine belonging to the 'Simoom'; taken ill at Cape Castle Coast; sick or hurt, febris, felt very unwell on the marched down to the Coast, complained now of headache and giddiness, loss of appetite and weakness; put on sick list, 2 December1873, sent 20 December 1873 to Hospital at Ascension.
