Description

Folio 22: case no 27, Alfred Evans, aged 18, Captain's Steward; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, debility; put on sick list, 2 March 1874, sent 4 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, with recommendation for mountain air.

Folio 22: case no 28, Thomas Cumming, aged 17, Boy; taken ill at [Ada Foah]; sick or hurt, debility, was put on the list since by the end of January for a contused and lacerated wound of the right inner ankle; put on sick list, 28 January 1874, sent 6 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folios 22-23: case no 29, John Ashley, aged 18, Boy; taken ill at Ascension; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 7 March 1874, sent 8 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, on 15 March returned to the ship, complained of great weakness and headache and scanty appetite, 19 April, had made fair recovery aided by change of climate, he was discharged to duty.

Folios 23-24: case no 30, Mr John Ryan, aged 21, Sub Lieutenant; taken ill at Ascension; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 8 March 1874, sent 9 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 24: case no 31, George Alford, aged 30, Able Seaman; was received from the Active at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, gunshot wound of left testicle, received on 31 January 1874 at the Battle of Amoaful; put on sick list, 24 February 1874, sent 6 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, on 15 March returned to the ship, there was still tenderness on under part of the testicle, discharged 19 April 1874 to light duty.

Folios 24-26: case no 32, William Luxford, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Ascension; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list, 14 March 1874, sent 27 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 26-27: case no 33, William Parker, aged 23, Private Marine; was received on board from Ascension on evening of 14 March; sick or hurt, he was discharged since 5 March for remittent fever (case no 19), now complained of great weakness and exhausted on coming on board; put on sick list, 14 March 1874, sent 27 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 27: case no 34, Rueben Triggs, aged 36, Captain’s Coxswain; taken ill on passage home; sick or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 13 April 1874, sent 27 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 27: case no 35, William Phillips, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, gonorrhoea, contracted at St. Vincent; put on sick list, 25 April 1874, sent 28 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 27: case no 36, George Lidstone, aged 21, Stoker; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, venereal warts; put on sick list, 25 April 1874, sent 28 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 28: case no 37, Mr William F S Mann, aged 28, Lieutenant; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, debility, [seems to be as noted] by Henry J Cox, '...was landed at Gold Coast and did duty with the Naval Brigade as Adjutant, though much hardship, he had no actual sickness till he returned to the ship when he was attacked with diarrhoea which assumed a dysenteric character...' signed Henry J Cox, surgeon.

Folio 28: case no 38, James Thomson, aged 43, Staff Surgeon; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, debility, [seems to be a noted] by Henry J Cox, 'Mr Thomson has had very indifferent health during most of the time the ship was on the Gold Coast', He has also suffered during the last two months from rheumatism, affecting the back, shoulders and hands...' signed Henry J Cox, surgeon.

Folio 28: case no 39, Edward Heres, aged 38, Able Seaman; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, delirium tremens (incipient); put on sick list, 13 May 1874, sent 13 May 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 28-29: case no 40, Mr Owens, aged 32, Gunner Royal Marine Artillery; taken ill at Devonport; sick or hurt, delirium tremens; put on sick list, 15 May 1874, sent 16 May 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.
