Description

Folio 13: William Clarke, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in his stomach and bowels, nausea, purging etc. Taken ill, 4 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 20 November 1798. Folio 13: Richard Sheridan, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his right side, difficulty breathing etc. Taken ill, 7 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay, Discharged to duty, 25 November 1798.

Folio 14: William Neal, aged 25, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, pain in his breast, difficulty breathing, troublesome cough. Taken ill, 11 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 15 November 1798. Folio 14: James Evans, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, two ulcers on the right leg, about the middle of the shin and a little above the ankle, caused by having the shin rubbed off, much inflammation. Taken ill, 12 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 28 December 1798. Folio 14: Hugh Thompson, aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent pain in the bowels, frequent inclination to go to stool with much straining and no result but blood and slime. Taken ill, 17 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Died 16 December 1798. Note alongside that the flux is again on the increase, several men being ill with violent symptoms.

Folio 15: Charles Smith, aged 26, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his stomach and bowels, nausea, headache, purging, tongue very foul. Taken ill, 18 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 22 November 1798. Folio 15: Humphry Quinlin, aged 20, Landsman; disease or hurt, purging attended with great pain in his bowels and violent straining. Taken ill, 21 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 28 November 1798. Folio 15: Joseph Rowlay, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his bowels, obstinate costiveness, yellow tinge over his body, purging mixture has had no effect. Taken ill, 22 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 2 December 1798.

Folio 16: Daniel Smith, aged 22, Landsman; disease or hurt, violent pains in his bowels and a frequent desire to go to stool, great pain across his loins, had a fall down the fore hatchway two days previously. Taken ill, 24 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to 28 December 1798. Folio 16: Note alongside treatment of James Reilay that all other wounded about the same time are doing well, with the exception of William Jones. Folio 16: Patrick Ryan, aged 30, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, nausea, great pain in his stomach and bowels. Taken ill, 28 November 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 5 December 1798. Folio 16: Note alongside treatment of Daniel Smith that the flux continues, one or two new cases every day.

Folio 17: Samuel Hulse, aged 22, Carpenter’s Crew; disease or hurt, great pains in his left side, difficulty breathing, troublesome cough, pulse strong and quick. Taken ill, 3 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 17 December 1798. Folio 17: William Paterson, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his bowels, frequent desire to go to stool with no result but slime and froth. Taken ill, 9 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 22 December 1798.

Folio 18: 10-19 December. No new cases. Amputation of William Jones’ arm on 18 December 1798.

Folio 19: John Dawson, aged 40, Quarter Master; disease or hurt, wound to his head about four inches in the direction of the coronal suture showing part of the bone, from a grattan falling on him while working in the hold. Taken ill, 20 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 11 January 1799. Folio 19: William Smith, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in his back and limbs, pulse 96, tongue foul, no stool for two days. Taken ill, 21 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 29 December 1798. Folio 19: George Carter, aged 27, Private Marine; disease or hurt, headache, pain in his breast, difficulty breathing etc. Taken ill, 25 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 16 January 1799. Folio 19: Mr Harpur, aged 30, Boatswain; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his back and limbs, pulse strong and full. Taken ill, 27 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 7 January 1799.

Folio 20: John Welsh, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his bowels, frequent desire to go to stool, stools slimy and small in quantity. Taken ill, 28 December 1798, Becquier [Aboukir] Bay. Discharged to duty, 6 January 1799. Folio 20: Conrad Henningson, aged 50, Quarter Gunner; disease or hurt, violent contusion on his right thigh and arm from a fall from the main deck down the hatchway into the cockpit. Taken ill, 5 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 20 April 1799. Folio 20: William Potter, aged 22, Carpenter’s Crew; disease or hurt, two ulcers on the right leg, a large one over the spine of the tibia and a small one above the ankle, both discharging. Taken ill, 5 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 10 May 1799. Folio 20: John Ellison, aged 23, Armourer’s Mate; disease or hurt, opthalmia, much pain in the right eye, knows of no cause for it. Taken ill, 6 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 19 February 1799.

Folio 21: Charles Marr, aged 29, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, nausea, great pain in his back and limbs, tongue foul, pulse 96 and regular. Taken ill, 10 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 17 January 1799. Folio 21: Samuel Middleton, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, nausea, great pain in his stomach and bowels attended with frequent slimy stools. Taken ill, 11 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 23 January 1799. Folio 21: Abram Watty, aged 42, Private Marine; disease or hurt, great pain in the hypogastric region and difficulty in making water, when flowing in a stream it sometimes stops suddenly, acute pains darting from the right side of the lumbar vertebrae to the groin and frequent shiverings. Taken ill, 11 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to the hospital ship, 26 March 1799.

Folio 22: Joseph Hill, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, troublesome cough without much expectoration, tightness in chest sometimes, considerably emaciated. Taken ill, 18 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 19 February 1799. Folio 22: Martin Norway, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, pain in his back and limbs, tongue foul, all preceded by shivering and severe paroxysms of fever. Taken ill, 21 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 30 January 1799. Folio 22: Walter Howard, aged 22, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent contusions on his left side and knee, by a fall from the fore yard. Taken ill, 23 January 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 8 February 1799. Folio 22: James Sympson, aged 33, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, fractured femur just above the left knee and violent contusions on the knee, head and left side, from two large bags of bread falling on him down the after hatchway. Taken ill, 25 January 1799, Caiffe [Haifa] Bay. Discharged to duty, 22 May 1799.
