Description

Folios 1-2: case no. 1, Jacob Brown, aged 28, Supry. P.M, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, peripneumonia, a spare, tall, narrow chested man was put on the list with severe catarrhal, subsequently peripneumonic symptoms, general debility, flying pains across the chest which affected breathing with mucous expectoration; put on sick list 19 November 1845, sent 26 November 1845 to Plymounth Hospital.

Folio 2: case no. 2, William Rodder, aged 26, Gunner's Mate, taken ill at Spithead; sick or hurt, phthisis incipiens, a tall spare man, contacted a severe cold upon the chest, harassing cough at night, there was no particular pain excepted a soreness from the effort of coughing; put on sick list 16 November 1845, sent 29 November 1845 to Plymouth Hospital.

Folio 3: case no. 3, John Barksfield, aged 30, Private Marine, taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, fractura of cranium (accident), three distinct wounds on the head with blood flowing profusely and oozing out of the mouth, the wounds were situated over the left parietal bone; put on sick list 29 November 1845, sent 29 November 1845 to Plymouth Hospital. Folio 3: case no. 3, John Barksfield, aged 30, Private Marine, taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, fractura of cranium (accident), three distinct wounds on the head with blood flowing profusely and oozing out of the mouth, the wounds were situated over the left parietal bone. The cause of this accident was the falling of the main Topgallant yard which penetrated the deck from which a large splinter struck him causing both compression and concussion of the brain. The verdict from the Coroner's Inquest was 'accidental death'; put on sick list 29 November 1845, died 29 November 1845 at Plymounth Hospital.

Folio 4: case no. 4, Silvanus Dalton, aged 50, Sailmaker, taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, vulnus and contusio, a large man of full habit of body, while employed on deck lowering the main Topgallant masts and yards. The main came down by the [?un] the mast rope of which came in contact with this man and another threw the former with great violence over one of the guns in the waist alighting on the left side above the floating ribs, but there were no fractured to the ribs. The right eyelid sustained a severe blow; put on sick list 2 December 1845, discharged 23 December 1845 to duty.

Folio 5: case no. 5, William Ralph, aged 20, Bandsman (Able Seaman), taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, hernia inguinal, according to his own statement whilst ascending the ladder from the lower to the main deck his foot slipped nearly three steps from the top and struck his stomach on the side of the ladder, and immediately he told most of the hands then assembled especially [Critchell?], Lindsay, Frazer and one of the signal men, that he hurt himself and they all advised him to see the Doctor. According to the Surgeon a few minutes after seeing him a hernia presented itself and advanced far into the scrotum, tender to the touch and appeared of recent formation. When the surgeon questioned the men of the patient's statement they were all corroborated fully; put on sick list 10 December 1845, discharged 15 December 1845 to duty.

Folios 5-6: case no. 6, Charles Wilcox, aged 23, Butcher, taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, pneumonia, a strong powerful looking man, complained of pain in the left side just under the true and junction of the false ribs; put on sick list 26 November 1845, discharged 14 December 1845 to duty.

Folios 6-7: case no. 7, John Stark, aged 25, Carpenter's Crew, taken ill at Plymouth Sound; sick or hurt, erysipelas phlegmondes, a diffused uncircumscribed phlegmon situated upon the centre of the patella of the left knee, accompanied with much pain; put on sick list 8 December 1845, discharged 27 January 1846 to duty.

Folios 7-8: case no. 8, Mr. C. Williamson, aged 16, Apt. Master, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, constipatio from sea sickness, he was found accidently laying about the chests and deck in a state of almost helplessness, according to the surgeon that 'no rational answer could be elicited from him' and he supposed that 'extreme sea sickness was the primary cause'; put on sick list 14 December 1845, discharged 20 December 1845 to duty.

Folios 8-9: case nos. 9 &10, Robert Wasson, aged 29, Private Marine, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris interm. says that he was one of the marines who were employed [farming?] a Colony in South Australasia called Port Essington, where he contracted intermittent fever, he now complained of languor, headache and sense of chilliness; put on sick list 15 December 1845, discharged 6 January 1846 to duty.

Folios 9-10: case no. 11, Solomon Gibbs, aged 29, M. P. [Military Police?], taken ill at Madeira; sick or hurt, pneumonia, caught a severe cold and complained of a pain in the left side of the chest about the sixth rib, accompanied with headache; put on sick list 21 December 1845, discharged 29 January 1846 to duty.

Folios 10-11: case no. 12, Robert Lewis, aged 36, Quarter Master, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, rheumatismus acute, he was put on the list on the 16 October last, and conveyed to Haslar Hospital, and was sent back cured before sailing from Spithead. He now complained of similar pain over the whole upper extremities, the muscular tissues of the right arm more especially the deltoid, much aggravated at night; put on sick list 25 December 1845, discharged 9 January 1846 to duty.

Folios 11-12: case no. 13, George Boxall, aged 21, Ordinary Seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, chronic constipatio with great tendency to inflammatory symptoms; put on sick list 12 December 1845, sent 17 February 1846 to Hospital.

Folios 13-14: case no. 14, Henry Newton, aged 31, Captain Main Top, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, acute rheumatism combined with syphilis, he was on the list for a short period with pain over the upper extremities and got well under Colchicum treatment, he now again complained of similar symptoms confined more to the scalp, these pains were intolerable at night time; put on sick list 7 January 1846, sent 17 February 1846 to Cape Hospital.

Folio 14: case no. 15, John Fulford, aged 37, Commander, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, alopecia [hair loss], about four years ago when he was employed on the Mediterranean Station the hair of the head became detached in small brunches from time to time and here and there; put on sick list 22 February 1846, sent 23 February 1846 to Hospital.
