Description

Folios 31-32: James Walworth, aged 28, Quarter Master; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 6 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for a passage to Ascension Hospital, 18 September 1841. 'Robust habit; temperament sanguinous', said he had been suffering intermittent fever every 48 hours for the last 4 or 5 days. He had also suffered ague at the age of 19 while working on a barge in the Thames, it had taken the form of a tertian and troubled him for three years. His usual residence was Greenhithe, Kent. He recovered shortly after leaving the river and rejoined the Albert at Fernando Po in October.

Folios 32-34: Edward Henderson, aged 28, Ship's Cook; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 6 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Discharged, 24 September 1841. 'Of a slight form. Negro. A native of Jamaica but has been 6 years at sea, and [has] had fever at San Domingo, West Indies, and has been 10 years in England'.

Folios 34 -35: Louis Wolfe, aged 19, Seamen's Schoolmaster; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 6 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for a passage to Ascension Hospital, 18 September 1841.

Folios 36-37: George Powell, aged 23, Cooper; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 7 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Died, 11 September 1841, at 'Ada Kudu', near the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River].

Folios 37-39: James Sims, aged 26, Private Marine; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 6 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for a passage to Ascension Hospital, 18 September 1841. He improved rapidly on leaving the river and remained on board the Soudan, rejoining the Albert in October.

Folios 39-41: Henry Gibson, aged 22, Private Marine; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 7 September 1841, at Iddah [Idah] in the Kingdom of Egarra [Igala], left bank of the Niger. Sent to the hospital at Ascension Island, 29 January 1842. He continued to suffer febrile symptoms until December, when the intermittent fever was succeeded by diarrhoea and dysentery, leaving him very weak. [Because of a mistake in the numbering of Folios there is no folio 42].

Folios 43-47: William Merriman, aged 32, Gunner; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 8 September 1841, on passage from Iddah [Idah] to the confluence of the Niger and the Tchadda [Benue River]. Invalided at Fernando Po, 22 November 1841. He showed little sign of improvement in the climate of Fernando Po and was put on board the Warree for a passage back to England.

Folios 48-50: F D Nightingale, aged 26, Assistant Surgeon; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 8 September 1841, on passage from Iddah [Idah] to the confluence of the Niger and the Tchadda [Benue River]. Died, 17 September 1841, at the confluence. 'Is of a slight make: [nervous] bilious temperament, has not been in a warm climate before', he had been received from the Amelia tender.

Folios 50-52: Tobias Edmonds, aged 32, Sergeant of Sappers; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 8 September 1841, on passage from Iddah [Idah] to the confluence of the Niger and the Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged, 13 December 1841. On 23 September he is noted as having a relapse after exposure to the sun the previous day.

Folios 52-54: William Moffatt, aged 27, Sapper; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 8 September 1841, On passage from Iddah [Idah] to the confluence of the Niger and the Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. Received from the Amelia tender with fever symptoms. He died on board the Dolphin on the passage to Ascension Island. 'While on board the Albert there was no appearance of active disease, of so insidious a character is this fever'.

Folios 54-55: Mehemet Ali, aged 30, Ship's Cook; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 9 September 1841, On passage from Iddah [Idah] to the confluence of the Niger and the Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. Discharged to the Soudan suffering only from debility but likely to continue weak for some time.

Folios 55-56: James May, aged 47, Boatswain's Mate; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 14 September 1841, at Stirling Hill, confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. 'Full habit. Temperament sanguineous. At sea nearly all his life, and in warm climates'.

Folios 57-58: Charles Loader, aged 31, Carpenter's Crew; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 14 September 1841, at the model farm, confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged, 23 November 1841.

Folios 58-61: Robert Millward, aged 46, Purser's Steward; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 14 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Died, 22 October 1841, at the hospital Fernando Po. 'Stout, full habit. Sanguineous temperament, has been at sea in various capacities upwards of twenty years; and principally in hot climates'.

Folio 61: Ellis Jones, aged 36, Quarter Master; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 17 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. Died on board HMS Dolphin on the passage to Ascension Island.

Folio 62: Thomas Ward, aged 28, Gunroom Steward; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 17 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841.

Folios 62-63: Richard Wilson, aged 20, [Engineer's Servant]; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 17 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged, 19 October 1841. 'A native of New York. Man of colour. Short and stout, well made. Has been eight years at sea. Chiefly in the South Seas'.

Folio 63: Robert Thomas, aged 24, Stoker; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 17 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Soudan for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. Died on the passage down the river.
