Description
Content
Folio 228. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, acknowledging his letter of 23 November 1841, inquiring about the payment of constables' expenses by the Truro guardians. They inform him that they are not aware of any legal authority allowing the costs of apprehending felons to be paid out of the poor rates. 18 Geo c 19 s 4 only allows indemnification of constables for sums expended on account of parishes or townships. The apprehension of those charged with felony or offences against the public peace, is not the business of the parish or township and the cases referred to cannot be defrayed out of the poor rates. They return the bills that were sent to them. Paper Number: 10700/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
