Folios 160-167. Letter from W Coryton Kempe [William Coryton Kempe], Tregony to the Poor Law Commission. He explains that the churchwardens and overseers of Tregony, in the Truro Poor Law Union borrowed money to build a workhouse, creating a charge on the rates. The security is held by Nicholas Ball, who received interest payments until 1840, when the Truro Union auditor disallowed it as an illegal expense. Ball has been advised that his claim is valid under 59 Geo III and hopes the Commission will order the auditor to allow future payment and order the sale of the workhouse to liquidate the debt. Certificate signed by Joseph Gerrans and Philip Murton, Overseers to Tregony, confirming that the Truro Union auditor refused to authorise future interest payments. Copies of three indentures: 19 June 1822 between James Aver, Churchwarden, William Cock and Francis Fugler, Overseers of Tregony and Arthur Kempe, describing how £200 was borrowed from Kempe to pay for the building of a workhouse. The loan to be repaid by 1825 and 5% interest to be paid in the mean time. 17 January 1824 between James Dunn Trevosa, executor of Arthur Kempe and Nicholas Ball of Veryan, in which the rights to the £200 and the interest payments are passed to Ball. Kempe's other executors are named as Reverend Jeremiah Trist and William Baker. 24 June 1824 between James Aver, Churchwarden, William Jacob and Nicholas Waken, Overseers of the Poor, Tregony and Nicholas Ball, in which it is agreed to pay the £200 plus interest to Ball in four instalments. Annotated: Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. 2 June 1841 Paper Number: 3837/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
