Description

Folios 1-2: case no.1, Samuel Knight, aged 34, prisoner, taken ill in English Channel; sick or hurt, this case not having been under my case for treatment nothing more can be given than the appearance after death, this man told me on board the York hulk that he was in perfect health, yesterday the 29th said that he was subject to violent fits of coughing which some time nearly produced suffocation, on 30th at 8 am. a message came to me saying that Knight the prisoner was taken ill with a fit of coughing, before I could get down into the prison he was dead; on the afternoon of the same day Dr. Barnes of the 17th Regiment and myself opened the chest when we saw the cause of his death, a very large aneurism sack or tumour of the superior arch of the aorta lay pressing upon the branchin just above the bifurcation below which there was a small quantity of purulent matter; put on sick list 30 July 1835, died 30 July 1835.

Folios 2-2a: case no.2, John Kelly, aged 30, corporal, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pain and swelling of the left side of the scrotum, nearly with water; put on sick list 10 August 1835, discharged 5 September 1835 to duty.

Folios 2a-5: case no.3, John Carrigan, aged 28, private, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, put on the sick list with catarrhal symptoms was treated with laxative and a cough mixture, on the 6th October cough very severe expectoration evidently purulent, he has evidently got symptoms of scorbutus, 18th October cough very distressing scorbutic symptoms, 25th November slept all night his pulse scarcely felt took nothing today except port wine; put on sick list 26 September 1835, died 26 November 1835 at 12 am.

Folios 5-7: case no.4, William Pluck, aged 42, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, complaint of want of appetite and says he feels very weak and troubled with headache, his gums are tender and shrunk; put on sick list 26 September 1835, discharged 18 December 1835 cured.

Folios 7-8: case no.5, Henry Tudor, aged 17, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, severe pain and griping in the abdomen very frequent loose stools and severe headache; put on sick list 15 October 1835, discharged 20 October 1835 cured.

Folios 8-9: case no.6, John Charlewood, aged 30, prisoner, taken ill near [Cape Attoway?]; sick or hurt, headache, pains in the back and loins much weakness; put on sick list 4 December 1835, sent 12 December 1835 to hospital at Sydney, having anchored at Sydney last night sent him to the hospital this morning, this man would not have lived two days longer at sea. Folios 9-10: Copy of sick list (names and details follow).. Folio 9: Samuel Knight, aged 34, prisoner; sick or hurt, aneurism; put on sick list 30 July 1835, died 30 July 1835.

Folio 9: William Goss, aged 37, prisoner; sick or hurt, ring worm; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 1 September 1835 cured.

Folio 9: Thomas Hughes, aged 32, prisoner; sick or hurt, ring worm; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 24 August 1835 cured.

Folio 9: Richard Hicks, aged 19, prisoner; sick or hurt, ring worm; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 2 September 1835 cured.

Folio 9: John Higgins, aged 26, prisoner; sick or hurt, ring worm; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 2 September 1835 cured.

Folio 9: John Hoare, aged 24, prisoner; sick or hurt, ring worm; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 28 August 1835 cured.

Folio 9: Daniel Keefe, aged 16, prisoner; sick or hurt, chancres; put on sick list 15 August 1835, discharged 24 August 1835 cured.

Folio 9: John Kelly, aged 30, soldier; sick or hurt, [hydro?]; put on sick list 17 August 1835, discharged 5 September 1835 cured.
