Description
Content
Folios 49-51. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to George Cornish, Vicar of Kenwyn and Kea, acknowledging his letter of 3 June 1835 and agreeing with him on the need for a workhouse in Kea. They are willing to sanction 'prudent expenditure' and on receipt of a plan of the proposed alterations will issue an order allowing the parish officers to go ahead with the plan. A scored out section warns of the importance of conforming to the Poor Law Amendment Act and states the Commission's preference for unions of parishes. Draft copy of order to authorise the alterations and enlargement of the poor house in Kea so that it can function as a workhouse. The contract for the work is to be given to James Cock. The management of the workhouse to be by the select vestry or the officers it appoints. The project to be financed by an additional poor rate. Annotated: draft answer to 7141. Cornwall stands 40 and so will not be entitled to an early visit. I am inclined to consent to the alteration JL [John George Shaw Lefevre, Poor Law Commissioner]. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
