2 individual petitions (Elizabeth Clewley, the prisoner's mother) on behalf of Thomas Clewley, brass founder, convicted at Warwick Summer Assizes August 1829, for being an accomplice in a burglary, property of William Usher. There is a letter from Thomas Clewley and Elizabeth Clewley to Sir Robert Peel, a letter from Sydney Smith to Mr Masterman, MP, requesting an interview with the Secretary of State to allow Clewley's return to the UK. Grounds for clemency: Clewley is a young man of previous good character, was enticed into the crime by established criminals, his later behaviour in NSW was of a standard sufficient to earn a conditional pardon in March 1846 but he continued to be excluded from the UK. Initial sentence: death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated: nil. FO50
