Description

2 individual petitions (prisoner and Sarah Bishop, the prisoner's mother) and 3 collective petitions (3 people, 8 people and 14 people from Doynton [Deynton], Gloucestershire) with 2 accompanying letters on behalf of Richard Bishop convicted at Gloucester Quarter Sessions in January 1832 for stealing 8 sovereigns and 2 half sovereigns from Jane Powe, publican, on 11 December.

Grounds for clemency:

  • only 20 years old,
  • previous honest character,
  • mother unable to support herself and 5 sons without help of prisoner,
  • innocent of crime,
  • prisoner claims he lost money in public house which was returned by Thomas Cullemore and then prosecutrix claimed it was her money she had lost.

Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Gaoler's report: character not known. Annotated: ordered to penitentiary, nil. KQ 5
