3 collective petitions (45 residents with occupations including prosecutor, plus copy, and two petitions from John Collins and Samuel Collins) on behalf of Joseph Collins convicted with William Bowles at the Leicester Lent Assizes in March 1834 for stealing 2 ducks belonging to James Harriman. There is a letter from Sir Nicholas Coningham Tindal, the trial judge. There is also a report from B Chapman, Governor of Millbank Penitentiary, confirming the prisoner's exemplary conduct during his 6 months sentence. Gaoler's report: report received and good character on his trial. Grounds for clemency: first offence, previous honest character, distress of mother, since trial William Bowles has confessed he committed crime with person named Pratt, not the prisoner, affidavits sent after trial. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated: sentence commuted to imprisonment for 6 months: free pardon prepared 13 Nov 1834. AT 9
