Folios 272-276. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. Enclosing for approval completed forms of medical officers appointed. Also informing that the forms of Mr Bowler and Mr Spencer of districts 3 and 5 have not been received or they would have been sent earlier. 1. Nathan Cooper as Medical Officer for the Number 1 District. The form shows Cooper, of Mansfield, was a member of Royal College of Surgeons London and a licentiate of the Apothecaries Company, London. 2. William Heywood Paulson as Medical Officer for the Number 2 District. The form shows Cooper, of Mansfield, was a member of Royal College of Surgeons London and holds a [L S R P], also a licentiate of the Apothecaries Company, London. 3. William Thomas Bowler as Medical Officer for the Number 3 District. The form shows Bowler, of Worsop, Mansfield and is a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries London. 4. Henry Isaac Lomax as Medical Officer for the Number 4 District. The form shows Lomax of Sutton in Ashfield had been the licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. 5. Griffin Spencer as Medical Officer for the Number 5 District. The form shows Spencer of Alferton passed the examination of the Royal College of Surgeons London as a Naval Surgeon and served two years as Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy. Annotated: Mr Cooper can hold District Number 1 workhouse permanently enquire whether the guardians could have appointed fully qualified and resident officers for district 2, 3 and 4. Ask whether Mr Spencer has a Warrant as an Assistant Surgeon in the Navy; if so the date of it. Paper Number: 21542/1855. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
