Folios 71-74. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Enclosed is a completed 'Appointment of Relieving Officer' form for Robert Michael Forster. The post was made vacant by the resignation of William Dods [former Relieving Officer for Norhamshire District] on account of old age. The form shows Forster, aged 32, of Spittal near Berwick-upon-Tweed, had been a bookkeeper and assistant to a general merchant in Berwick-upon-Tweed, previously a member of the Berwick-upon-Tweed police force and a tea dealer and grocer there. He was Overseer of the Poor for the parish of Berwich for the year 1841-1842. The salary to be £70 per annum. He is responsible for the Norhamshire District consisting of Cornhill, Lowick, Horncliff, Thornton, Norham Mains, Shoreswood, Felkington, Duddo, Norham, Grindon, Twizell and Longridge. Annotated: 11 April 1845: [to] Hawley [W H Toovey Hawley, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]. Annotated: 12 April 1845 by W H T H [W H Toovey Hawley, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], that the appointment may be confirmed. Annotated: 14 April 1845, that the Commission is prepared to sanction if Forster can show that he is free from liability as regards his creditors. Paper number: 4150/A/1845. [Folio 70 is a guard to replace removed page 4149/1845]. Poor Law Union Number 325. Counties: Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed and Northumberland.
