Folios 485-487. Letter from Henry Edwards Paine, Clerk to the Guardians of the Rye Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission enclosing an account of the outdoor relief given to able-bodied persons in the week ending 19 November 1842 in contravention of the prohibitory order dated 2 August 1841. With three exceptions the guardians have required the performance of labour in return for the relief, as required by the commission's outdoor labour test order dated 9 July 1842. The report of outdoor relief given shows the recipients' names, their age, occupation, their parish the reason they seek relief, the nature and amount of relief given and any other notes such as the labour to be performed. The names and ages, where given, of those listed are: From Rye; John Blundell 20, Edward Edwards 46 his wife and six children, William Head 35 his wife and five children, [and illegible]. From Brede; Samuel Noakes 30. From Udimore; William Barden 35 and three children, William Edwards 32, his wife and four children [and illegible]. From Winchelsea; [There are two entries where the family name is obscured]. From Guldeford; Jacob Pope 34 his wife and four children, William Tillman 19. From Northiam; Thomas Newble 45 his wife and three children, John Longley 20, Thomas Cook 48, William Carter 25, James Playford 18, Henry Trill 17, James Jewhurst 18, Edward Newble 17, Daniel Ransom 26 his wife and infant, Henry Collins 17, James Chester 47 and his wife, John Wibourn 47, his wife 49 and two children Susanah Wibourn 15 and Mark Wibourn 12, Jane Santer 35 and her two children Mary Ann Santer 10 and Jane Santer 6 [and illegible]. From Beckley; Francis Paine 20, Jesse Fielder 32 his wife and two children, William Brand 37 and George Brand 15, Benjamin Fuller and wife, Samuel Cooper 17, William Henley 22, Albert Taylor 24, John Bull 23 his wife and one child, Francis Paine 45 his wife and four children, [Hezekiah Venner] 32, his wife 22 and daughter Elizabeth Venner 4, William Bartholomew, Henry Munk 39 his wife and four children Hannah Munk 11, Stephen Munk 9, Hiram Munk 4 and Thomas Munk 1. From Peasmarsh; Richard Neeves, wife and four children, Abraham Dunck, wife and three children, Thomas Monk, wife and five children, John Palmer, wife and six children, From Icklesham; William Gurr 15, Elizabeth Barden 20, Lucy Barden 19, Joshua Harman 63 [and illegible]. Annotated: by Henry W Parker, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, to sanction. The outdoor labour test is inapplicable in the case of women, with or without bastard children. Paper number: 14466/B/1842.
