Folios 20-21: Surgeon's general remarks. The Guard consisted of 1 Lieutenant and 30 men of the 99th Regiment. The guard were all young recruits under 22 years of age. Embarked 193 convicts, 5 children and five free settlers. The general complaints were sea sickness, diarrhoea and constipation. Only four cases of catarrh appeared amongst the prisoners but was a general complaint with the guard in the month of December from sleeping on deck in the night watch although against orders. One prisoner died on the 26th [December] from an apoplectic stroke, he was seized on the 21st during the whole of this period he was speechless and insensible. During the month of January 1842 the prevalent complaint amongst the prisoners was catarrh as a result of many of them having worn their clothes out, wet weather and reduced temperature. On the 10th [January] one prisoner died from atrophia, he was an old man, no internal disease could be detected. During the month of February two prisoners died one from confirmed phthisis, the other from pneumonia (no. 10), however according to the surgeon he inclined to think that this patient died of a violent attack of bronchitis.
