Description

Folios 5-6: case no 1, Thomas Davis, aged 27, convict; taken ill at Woolwich; sick or hurt, pneumonia, severe pain in the right side increased by inspiration; put on sick list 11 March 1837, discharged 29 March 1837 off the list.

Folio 6: case no 2, John Whitehead, aged 17, convict; taken ill off Woolwich; sick or hurt, febris intermittent; put on sick list 12 March 1837, discharged 20 March 1837 off the list, the quinine was administered as ordered until last evening, no return of the fever, he is now quite well.

Folio 7: case no 3, John Spearman, aged 34, convict; taken ill off Woolwich; sick or hurt, pneumonia; put on sick list 12 March 1837, discharged 18 March 1837 off the list, the solution of tartarioid antimony was continued until yesterday without having produced either nausea or purging and the symptoms gradually subsided.

Folios 7-8: case no 15, James Ibbott, aged 19, convict; taken ill in the Channel; sick or hurt, asthma, pneumonia and disease of heart, complains of great pain in the left breast with difficulty of breathing and sense of suffocation, skin cool on the extremities but very hot in the neck and breast, ten ounces of blood taken from the arm with considerable relief, on the 24th March great difficulty of breathing and working of the chest with acute pains darting across the chest, pulse 100; put on sick list 18 March 1837, died 25 March 1837 at 1 am, the state of weather prevented the inspection of the body.

Folio 8: case no 17, John Myles, aged 17, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scrofula, had scrofulous ulcerations in the upper and lower extremity of both sides and discharged a thin fluid from various fistulous openings, I received him because I thought a change of climate and treatment his only chances, but [James] Ibbott and [James] Butterfield were impound upon me, he [also] had various attacks of diarrhoea during the voyage, the treatment was tonics combined with laxative, blue pill and opium the most beneficial [was] chloride of soda diluted to wash the ulcerations three times a day; put on sick list 21 March 1837, sent 17 July 1837 to hospital at Hobart Town.

Folios 9-10: case no 18, William Henry Harrison, aged 16, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, synocha; put on sick list 23 March 1837, discharged 16 April 1837 off the list.

Folio 10: case no 19, James Allen, aged 32, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, debilitas [quore] scorbutus; put on sick list 23 March 1837, discharged 4 April 1837 off the list.

Folios 11-12: case no 21, James Butterfield, aged 19, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonia and asthma, on 15th April, think himself better, has been semi delirious all night talking about eating and wishing for raw bacon, bowels relaxed appetite very good pulse 120 and very weak, breathing oppressed and hurried, he is a perfect skeleton, to have ten drops of tincture of opium with each pill; put on sick list 24 March 1837, died 18 April 1837 at 12 o'clock.

Folios 12-13: case no 35, Joseph Wright, aged 78, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, erysipelas; put on sick list 10 April 1837, died 13 April 1837 at about 3:30 pm.

Folios 13-14: case no 38, George Bardon, aged 20, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris intermittent; put on sick list 15 April 1837, discharged 6 May 1837 off the list.

Folio 15: case no 41, Henry Swanston, aged 22, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris intermittent; put on sick list 23 April 1837, discharged 2 May 1837 off the list.

Folios 16-17: case no 42, Mathias Deane, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, synocha; put on sick list 24 April 1837, discharged 13 May 1837 off the list.

Folios 17-18: case no 45, Thomas Doney, aged 22, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, enteritis, very emaciated, has had several attacks of diarrhoea since he came on board, complained of pain in the abdomen with frequent purging, four grains of calomel and one of opium were given at bedtime, he feels very considerable pain on pressure over the whole abdomen, particularly in the left hypochondrium, on the 6th May, the swelling pain increased the pain shifting to the right side, an enema brought away a little fetid matter, blister was applied; put on sick list 28 April 1837, discharged 7 May 1837 at 10:45 am, two hours after death the abdomen had swelled to an enormous size.

Folio 19: case no 46, George Tull, aged 40, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea and scorbutus; put on sick list 5 May 1837, discharged 7 June 1837 off the list.

Folios 20-21: case no 55, James Punchard, aged 30, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus; put on sick list 15 May 1837, discharged 20 June 1837 off the list.

Folios 22-23: case no 68, Mathias Deane, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus; put on sick list 7 June 1837, discharged 20 June 1837 off the list.

Folios 23-24: case no 74, John Maddox, aged 27, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list 15 June 1837, discharged 16 July 1837 off the list.

Folio 25: case no 85, Martin Bott, aged 20, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus, gums spongy, swelled and disposed to bleed, the body generally covered with blotches and his limbs ulcerated, covered with sores, complains of tormenting itching of the skin and where ever it is scratched it rubs off and leaves a superficial sore, general health good, the sores to be washed twice a day with a solution of the chloride of lime and afterwards dressed with basilicon mixed with a small quantity of oil of turpentine and he is to take a dram of nitre and ounce of vinegar and two drops of oil of peppermint tree times a day; put on sick list 27 June 1837, sent 17 July 1837 to hospital at Hobart Town.

Folio 25: case no 87, Joseph McClasky, aged 24, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus, a great unweildy, lazy, dirty sloven, who from his filthy habits and indolent disposition has given a great deal of trouble ever since he was embarked; put on sick list 27 June 1837, sent 17 July 1837 to hospital at Hobart Town.

Folio 26: case no 88, Richard Ward, aged 22, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, scorbutus; put on sick list 28 June 1837, discharged 15 July 1837 off the list, since last report the gums got gradually well and the visicles disappeared, is now in his usual vigorous state of health, his rapid perfect recovery attributed to his active habits, I have inserted the last few cases of scorbutic affection to show how varied are its forms, how much some and how little other yield to the influence of medicine.

Folios 26-27: case no 92, William Platt, aged 23, soldier; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonia and phthisis; put on sick list 4 July 1837, sent 17 July 1837 to hospital at Hobart Town.

Folio 27: case no 93, Richard Bold, aged 20, soldier; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, clavicula fractura, while drinking his grog on the quarter deck the ship gave a roll and he fell and fractured the right clavicle close to its external extremity, a proper bandage was applied; put on sick list 10 July 1837, sent 22 July 1837 to hospital at Hobart Town.
