Description

Folio 13: Will Gibbs, marine, aged 28; disease or hurt, frequent loose stools with griping. Taken ill, 22 July 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 29 July 1800.

Folio 13: Thomas How, Seaman, aged 16; disease or hurt, frequent loose stools with griping. Taken ill, 23 July 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to Minorca Hospital, 25 July 1800.

Folio 13: Laurence Grossenburgh, marine, aged 65; disease or hurt, headache over the eyes, nocturnal sweats, quick and feeble pulse, furred tongue. Taken ill, 22 July 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to Minorca Hospital, 25 July 1800.

Folio 14: Robert Shenfield, marine, aged 40; disease or hurt, cold shiverings succeeded by heat, headache and thirst with a sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 1 August 1800, Port Mahon. Died 2 August 1800. Remarks that this man must have died from ‘an effusion of mucus or blood into the cellular texture of the lungs which is supposed to be peculiar to inflammatory affections o the thoracic viscera’.

Folio 15: Will Gibbs, marine, aged 28; disease or hurt, cold shivering followed by headache and thirst, sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 1 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to Minorca Hospital, 2 August 1800. Remarks that the heat and the number of troops on board are good enough reasons to send this man on shore but his inflammatory symptoms might also justify it.

Folio 15: Mr C White, master, aged 29; disease or hurt, frequent vomiting, loose stools, severe griping, matter evacuated has a yellow, bilious appearance. Taken ill, 2 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 8 August 1800.

Folio 15: Mr W Cowell, midshipman, aged 19; disease or hurt, pain in the side, no symptoms of pyrexia. Taken ill, 10 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 20 August 1800,

Folio 15: Mr R Theo, Lieutenant, aged 27; disease or hurt, violent vomiting and purging, severe griping, matter rejected bilious in appearance. Taken ill, 16 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 24 August 1800.

Folio 16: Will Davies, seaman, aged 36; disease or hurt, severe cold chills, succeeded by heat and headache, the paroxysm has an interval of 48 hours. Taken ill, 17 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 30 August 1800.

Folio 16: John Axton, seaman, aged 29; disease or hurt, cold chills succeeded by heat, headache, thirst, with a sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 20 August 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to duty 6 September 1800.

Folio 17: Mr Taylor, seaman, aged 40; disease or hurt, cold chills succeeded by heat, headache, thirst, with a sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 4 September 1800, Port Mahon. Discharged to Gibraltar Hospital, 15 September 1800. Remarks that Taylor was more debilitated than the other cases.

Folio 17: Samuel Downton, seaman, aged 40; disease or hurt, contusion on the left knee, much swelled and inflamed. Taken ill, 9 October 1800, at sea. Discharged to duty 18 October 1800.

Folio 18: William Harris, seaman, aged 29; disease or hurt, cold chills succeeded by heat, headache, thirst, with a sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 20 October 1800, at sea. Discharged to duty 27 October 1800.

Folio 18: William Johnson, seaman, aged 46; disease or hurt, pain in his right side form a fall. Taken ill, 23 October 1800, Tetuan Bay. Discharged to duty 28 October 1800.

Folio 18: Will Ruddy, marine, aged 28; disease or hurt, purging and griping. Taken ill, 30 October 1800, Gibraltar. Discharged to Lisbon Hospital, 10 November 1800.

Folio 19: Remarks that the ship’s company began to show signs of scurvy having been for five months on salt rations. They were given similar treatment to Ruddy, along with others that had not complained. This treatment prevented fatality among the crew, there were several deaths among the troops on board who did not get similar treatment.

Folio 19: Jonathan Mills, seaman, aged 28; disease or hurt, fracture of the inferior maxillary bone, with a lacerated wound under the left ear. Taken ill, 3 November 1800, at sea. Discharged to duty 25 November 1800.

Folio 20: Morris Black, seaman, aged 33; disease or hurt, cold shiverings followed by heat, headache, thirst, with a sickness at the stomach. Taken ill, 7 November 1800, Lisbon. Discharged to duty 25 November 1800.
