Description
Content
Folios 402-403. Letter to the Poor Law Board from Thomas Hutchinson and Anthony Metcalfe, Overseers, Whitaside, asking, on behalf of the ratepayers of Grinton in the Reeth Poor Law Union, for advice concerning the appointment of John Close as a guardian for the parish. Close was nominated at the last election as guardian for the township of Grinton, the nominees being Francis Garth of Crackpot, and George Metcalfe of Whitaside, two of the principal ratepayers of Grinton. The clerk, acting as returning officer, on receipt of the nomination sent a letter asking them to go to the Board room with the rate book, to prove that Close could legally be nominated. This letter arrived too late, and because of this, Close was not elected guardian. They want to know the opinion of the Board as to whether there should be another election. Annotated: forward copy to clerk. utchiH 19191/1852. Poor Law Union Number 555. Counties: Yorkshire North Riding.
