Folios 22-23: Surgeon's general remarks. Comments on the temperature and weather during the voyage. August and September 1828 were spent fitting out at Woolwich and receiving the convicts, free women and children. Some constipation from the change of diet, one case of enteritis and one of hamoptysis. The ship was very crowded, with 100 female convicts and 87 free women and children. Inflammatory fever broke out in the tropics, it yielded to 'free and active use of the lancet, purgatives, saline [diaphoretics], cold [...] drinks, with low regiment and free ventilation'. Two infant children died on the voyage. There were some cases of cholera and pneumonia, opthalmia and catarrh as they went further south. There were a number of cases of debility, some constitutional, others from an inability to [eat] their provisions. Nourishing soups and wine soon restored strength. The Surgeon was able to detect diseases early by daily examination of the women and children. The hospital, prison and all parts of the ship were kept clean and well ventilated. Signed, William Clifford, Surgeon and Superintendent.
