Description

Folios 1-2: On arrival of the guard aboard the Hooghly on 13 November 1824, the Surgeon found 5 or 6 affected with catarrhal symptoms arising from the cold and wet on their march from Chatham to Deptford. James Barnes had very aggravated symptoms but falsely claimed to have been well when he left Chatham, in fact he had suffered diseases of the chest for years and had just come off the sick list. After arrival at Cove of Cork he was surveyed and sent to hospital, the Surgeon believing he was unfit for the voyage. His symptoms and treatment are described. The following folios list soldiers who were ill on arrival or shortly afterwards. No dates of discharge from the sick list are recorded.

Folio 3: Robert Tainsh, Surgeon; disease or hurt, cholera, diarrhoea with dysenteric symptoms. Taken ill about 18 December 1824, no date of recovery recorded.

Folio 3: 18 December 1824, received 196 prisoners. Several had large wounds on their heads from a severe conflict aboard the hulk a few days previously in which one man was killed. Three with bowel complaints were rejected. Surgeon Tainsh developed cholera symptoms after going back and forth to the hulk in an open boat in bad weather. After 12 hours cholera gave way to diarrhoea, he describes how he treated himself. After exerting himself in bringing the prisoners under control he suffered a relapse of diarrhoea with dysenteric symptoms.
