Description

Folios 38-39: John Welling, aged 30, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, fever, subsequent to injury of the spine. Put on sick list, 25 September 1827, off Navarino. Died, 6 October 1827. Severely sprained his loins lifting a heavy weight but did not complain until the day after. Mentions consulting the Surgeon at Genoa about bleeding him, 5 October.

Folios 39-40: William Mee, aged 23, Private Marine; disease or hurt, abscess. Put on sick list, 17 September 1827, off Navarino. Discharged to duty, 11 October 1827.

Folios 40-42: Thomas Bell, aged 23, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, injury of the spine. Put on sick list, 30 September 1827, off Navarino. Discharged to Malta Lazaretto for hospital. Fell from the main deck down the fore hatchway into the fore cockpit and severely injured his spine. A tumour formed at the site of the injury with two hard protuberances in it assumed to be parts of the process of one of his vertebrae, fractured and displaced. He had little sensation and no power in the lower part of his body. Fearing gangrene and nothing to be done for him on board he was sent to the lazaretto, since the ship was in quarantine, to be sent to the hospital.

Folio 42: Stephen Gregory, aged 29, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 5 October 1827, at Malta. Discharged to duty, 19 October 1827.

Folio 43: Lists of killed and wounded on the Albion in the Battle of Navarino, 20 October 1827. Cases worthy of mention are detailed afterwards in the order in which they were discharged from the sick list.

Mr W Boys, Midshipman, contused abdomen. William Smith, Boatswain's Mate, contused arm. Jonathan Anthony, Marine, splinter wound of foot. Total number of wounded 56.

Folio 44: John Key, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, musket ball wound. Put on sick list, 20 October 1827, Navarino Bay. Died, 28 October 1827. A musket ball passed through his left arm about an inch and a half above the middle, passing from before backwards, over the humerus but without injuring it. The wound did well but on the morning of 27 October 1827 he woke with a stiff neck and unable to open his mouth widely. He died at 4am on the 28 October 1827.

Folio 45: John Humphreys, aged 28, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, splinter wound. Put on sick list, 20 October 1827, Navarino Harbour. Discharged to duty, 2 November 1827. Had an extensive abrasion of the [...] of the loins from the blow of a splinter.

Folio 45: John Cammish, aged 35, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, splinter wounds. Put on sick list, 20 October 1827, Navarino Harbour. Discharged to duty, 4 November 1827. Several cuts and bruises in various parts of the body from splinters, all superficial.

Folio 45: Michael Boyd, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, splinter wounds. Put on sick list, 20 October 1827, Navarino Harbour. Discharged to duty, 9 November 1827. Several abrasions and severe contusions in different parts of the body from splinters and his left ear is half severed from the head.
