Description (What the record is about)
-
William Wellesley Pole. Messrs. B. Foyle and Company, the owners of Active brig letter of marque, claim payment for services rendered by the ship and her master, Edward Oates. Captain H. Hotham on board Defiance off Corruna has certified that Oates delivered to him dispatches from Mr. Hunter at Gijon, addressed to Sir Hew Dalrymple, which Captain Hotham agreed to convey to Sir Charles Cotton on the Hibernia off the Tagus. A letter from Mr. Hunter to George Canning states that Oates volunteered to convey a dispatch from Hunter together with dispatches from the Junta to the Asturian Deputies in London. Mr. Oates in a letter from Greenwich writes that he gave up his cruise of the French coast to deliver the dispatches from Gijon to London. Opine that the ship's owners should be paid four hundred pounds.
