The registers give the petitions for protection from process's name, address and occupation and details of the court and debt concerned. They relate mainly to petitions from bankrupts under the Bankruptcy Act 1883, but there are a few for insolvent debtors from 1854 to 1861 under the County Courts Act 1854.
Entries were made in the appropriate register according to the initial letter of petitioners' surnames and one register has survived and been transferred for each letter of the alphabet except X.

The Registers were maintained by the Registry of County Court Judgements, which was established under the County Courts Act 1852. Until 1861 entries relate to insolvent debtors seeking protection under the County Courts Act 1854. Following a change in practice under the Bankruptcy Act 1861, the Registry's responsibilities ceased until 1883 when entries were resumed in respect of debtors in bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy Act 1883.
