Description (What the record is about)
-
Philip Stephens. Report on the progress of assessing offers of German timber for the Navy. The timber in the Elbe, offered by Mr. Soltan, lies in mud and is viable only at low water. Mr. Woodford, the agent, says it is difficult to assess the quality and it would be risky to buy the lot at the price set by Mr. Soltan. It might be wiser to buy it by the load, but Mr. Soltan has not reacted to this. Mr. Hunbury is to assess a price for transporting all the timber in 4,500 tons of shipping. Mr. Grove, the Auras agent for the Silesian timber, seems to want to contract with us in the usual way, giving us a chance to choose the timber suitable for Naval use and to keep ready timber suitable for hooks, crooks and knees. It would be priced per load. Silesian timber has not yet been surveyed
