Description (What the record is about)
-
Philip Stephens. Robert Hughes, Chaplain of the Ordinary at Plymouth, has sent a memorial asking for permission to enlarge the chapel at his own expense to accommodate the Artificers, who now cannot be admitted for lack of space. The chapel was built by voluntary subscription of the Officers and Seamen, paid off at the end of Queen Ann's War, and is too small to contain the ordinary and Officers of the Yard. The parish is increased by the enlargement of the yard and the Church is a mile away from town. Opine the workmen would be glad to attend Divine Service in the chapel if the proposed addition was made and pay for their seats as is now done by the Officers of the Yard and other persons of the Yard. Recommend Mr. Hughes' memorial for approval and propose he is supplied with some scaffolding and unserviceable materials to make the roof of another aisle on condition that an additional gallery for their use and a pew for the Officers of the Guardships is reserved in the new building
