Description (What the record is about)
-
John Clevland. The owners of the Hopewell Success, hired to serve as a transport in 1759, inform us that when she was in Quiberon Bay employed as a Victualler, she was forced by a gale within musket shot of the shore near a fort called Penthievre where she was taken by the enemy. According to the Conditions of Agreement they asked to be paid for the ship. The owners by their Charter Party are entitled to be paid for the ship if she is taken, sunk or destroyed by the enemy. Ask for a Court Martial which could be held at Portsmouth as the Master, Christopher Franklin, and the Mate, John Marshall, is Master and Mate of the Blacket transport, now also there.
