Admiral Byng to the Board. At the time of the incident in 1746 mentioned by John Short, late Master of the Sarah of Boresterness, he was in the Firth of Forth, when both banks of the river were in the rebels' hands and all shipping in the area had to be observed very closely. The Sarah was coming up the Firth, sailing close to the north shore which made him suspect she was on the rebels' side. One of his ships tried to bring her to a stop but she kept sailing on, despite several attempts to make her stop. She lost her foresail, stopped and was lost in high winds, which he thought was due to Short's failure to leave.
