John Clevland. Charles Stewart, Lieutenant of the Rose, who was present at the Court Martial of Admirals Mathews and Lestock, reports that a mistake was made in the record of the trial. He was not given his proper rank and asks for rectification. We find that Stewart served on the Neptune from 1741-1744 when he was transferred to the Newcastle as Master's Mate, where he was supernumerary. He was then sent home to attend the Court Martial. The procedure is that men transferred under these circumstances should be paid in their last substantive rank, which means that Stewart had no claim
