Description (What the record is about)
-
Thomas Corbett. John Sibson, owner of the Tryton, Thomas Askew Master, says Commissioner Trefusis at Portmahon, contracted him to carry troops from Portmahon to Gibraltar and when he applied for payment was refused because the contract was made abroad. It was drawn up by Mr. Trefusis in January 1745 for one month certain and for such longer time as was necessary to transport General Reed's regiment from Minorca to Gibraltar. When they arrived the Commander of the ship should have been given a certificate of discharge by the Commander in Chief, Lieutenant General William Hargrave. This was signed in March 1746 and the ship was discharged in April. Captain Strange of the Burford has certified this. We are justified in refusing to pay Mr. Sibson as the voyage was nothing to do with us
